COUNTY RECORDER
In 1803, the Ohio General Assembly moved to retain the office of recorder, perpetuating the recorder’s functions which began in the Northwest Territory during the 1790s. Initially appointed by the associate judges of the common pleas court, the county recorder became an elective position in 1829. The recorder presently serves a four-year term.
The county recorder’s primary responsibility is the recording of all deeds, mortgages, and conveyances of lands and buildings within the county. In addition, all maps and plats of newly laid out villages are reordered and all records from other counties concerning land sales or conveyance which affect titles in the county are transcribed. Other duties assigned to the county recorder include the recording of powers of attorney, mechanics’ liens, soldiers’ discharges, leases and financing statements.
